Forrest General’s Cancer Registry staff joined cancer registrars, medical professionals and community leaders throughout the world in celebrating National Cancer Registrars Week. The 2012 theme, Partners in Progress, emphasizes the role of a cancer registrar in providing a foundation for cancer research, prevention and treatment and partnering with the medical community for a cancer free tomorrow.
Forrest General employs three cancer registrars that are responsible for collecting and coding patient data for submission to the Mississippi Cancer Registry. The department’s goal is to guarantee accurate and timely collection of diagnosed and/or treated cancer patient data. The registrars provide essential information to healthcare providers and health officials to better monitor and improve cancer treatment, conduct research and target cancer prevention and screening programs. Forrest General’s Cancer Registry has been in operation since 1968, which has allowed staff to evaluate patient outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement over a long period of time.
